Thieves Blend! Excellent Preventative Care
Essential for the Cold Season
As a mother of two school aged children, I have noticed a lot more sniffles and sneezes going around during this fall season. As the weather cools and more time is spent indoors, it is important to remember that there are things we can do to help prevent colds and sickness from effecting our health and our family’s. Hand washing is a wonderful tool to combat germs and I encourage it as soon as my children get home from school and especially before eating. I also support my family’s immune system by keeping simple teas, such as lemon balm and hibiscus, in the fridge.
In addition to encouraging hand washing and boosting the immune system, one of my favorite tools to prevent illness this time of year is Thieves Blend. The name has always been a little humorous to me.
Thieves Blend received its name during the Plague in Europe in the 1400’s. During this time, the police began to notice that many who had passed away from the Plague had their valuable possessions stolen. After the police began to investigate further, a few thieves were caught and forced to explain how they could get so close to those with the Plague and not contract it. It turned out that the Thieves were perfumers and spice traders. They were knowledgeable of plant medicines and created a blend that kept them from contracting the Plague!
The traditional blend uses; Clove, Lemon peel, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary
This blend proves to be extremely antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. I enjoy adding this blend of oils into a spray bottle, and applying it as a spritzer. I add about 20 drops of oil blend to a 2 ounce spray bottle filled with filtered water (10 drops per ounce). This spray can be misted all over the body from head to toe before going to crowded places (Just be sure not to get it in the eyes!). It is also wonderful to spray on door handles, in bathrooms, and on pillows if someone isn’t feeling well in the house. This seems to help prevent others in the house from getting sick.
There are other wonderful things you can do with this powerful essential oil blend too!
- Add 10 drops to your natural surface cleaner
- 2-3 drops in a vapor diffuser for coughs and runny noses
- Add 1-2 drops to the floor board in your car (great smell and anti-bacterial)
- Add 5-10 drops to bath water to support clear lungs and nasal passages
Thieves’ Essential oil should be avoided topically for pregnant women and infants.
Most health food stores carry the blend or if you like to be crafty, you can certain make your own blend!
